To enable Active\u00a0Directory Recycle Bin, your environment must meet the requirements in the following sections.<\/p>\n<div>\n<div><a class=\"LW_CollapsibleArea_TitleAhref\" title=\"\"><span class=\"LW_CollapsibleArea_Title\">Active Directory Domain Services environment<\/span><\/a><\/p>\n<div id=\"Anchor_0\" class=\"LW_CollapsibleArea_Anchor_Div\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"LW_CollapsibleArea_HrDiv\">\n<hr class=\"LW_CollapsibleArea_Hr\" \/>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"sectionblock\">\n<p>Do the following before you enable Active\u00a0Directory Recycle Bin in an Active\u00a0Directory Domain Services (AD\u00a0DS) environment:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li class=\"unordered\">Run Adprep to update your Active\u00a0Directory schema with the necessary Active\u00a0Directory Recycle Bin attributes. Membership in the Schema Admins group is the minimum required to complete the following Adprep tasks:\n<div class=\"alert\">\n<div class=\"contentTableWrapper\">\n<table>\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<th align=\"left\"><img decoding=\"async\" id=\"Important\" class=\"cl_IC160177\" title=\"Important\" src=\"https:\/\/i-technet.sec.s-msft.com\/areas\/global\/content\/clear.gif\" alt=\"Important\" \/>Important<\/th>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td>If you are performing a clean installation of a Windows Server\u00a02008\u00a0R2 Active\u00a0Directory forest, you do not have to run Adprep and your Active\u00a0Directory schema will automatically contain all the necessary attributes for the Active\u00a0Directory Recycle Bin to function properly. If, however, you are introducing a Windows Server\u00a02008\u00a0R2 domain controller into your existing Windows\u00a0Server\u00a02003 or Windows\u00a0Server\u00a02008 forest and, subsequently, upgrading the rest of the domain controllers to Windows Server\u00a02008\u00a0R2, you must run Adprep to update your Active\u00a0Directory schema with the attributes that are necessary for Active\u00a0Directory Recycle Bin to function correctly.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<ul>\n<li class=\"unordered\">Prepare the forest by running the <strong>adprep \/forestprep<\/strong> command on the server that holds the schema master operations master (also known as flexible single master operations or FSMO) role to update the schema.<\/li>\n<li class=\"unordered\">Prepare the domain by running the <strong>adprep \/domainprep \/gpprep<\/strong> command on the server that holds the infrastructure operations master role.<\/li>\n<li class=\"unordered\">If a read-only domain controller (RODC) is present in your AD\u00a0DS environment, you must also run the <strong>adprep \/rodcprep<\/strong> command.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li class=\"unordered\">Make sure that all domain controllers in your Active\u00a0Directory forest are running Windows Server\u00a02008\u00a0R2.<\/li>\n<li class=\"unordered\">Raise the functional level of your Active\u00a0Directory forest to Windows Server\u00a02008\u00a0R2.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<div><a class=\"LW_CollapsibleArea_TitleAhref\" title=\"\"><span class=\"LW_CollapsibleArea_Title\">Active Directory Lightweight Directory Services environment<\/span><\/a><\/p>\n<div id=\"Anchor_1\" class=\"LW_CollapsibleArea_Anchor_Div active\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"LW_CollapsibleArea_HrDiv\">\n<hr class=\"LW_CollapsibleArea_Hr\" \/>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"sectionblock\">\n<p>Do the following before you enable Active\u00a0Directory Recycle Bin in an Active\u00a0Directory Lightweight Directory Services (AD\u00a0LDS) environment:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li class=\"unordered\">Upgrade the schema of your AD\u00a0LDS configuration set with the necessary Active\u00a0Directory Recycle Bin attributes by running the following command:\n<p><code>Ldifde.exe \u2013i \u2013f MS-ADAM-Upgrade-2.ldf \u2013s server:port \u2013b username domain password \u2013j . -$ adamschema.cat<\/code><\/p>\n<div class=\"alert\">\n<div class=\"contentTableWrapper\">\n<table>\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<th align=\"left\"><img decoding=\"async\" id=\"note\" class=\"cl_IC101471\" title=\"note\" src=\"https:\/\/i-technet.sec.s-msft.com\/areas\/global\/content\/clear.gif\" alt=\"note\" \/>Note<\/th>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td>If you are upgrading your environment to Windows Server\u00a02008\u00a0R2, you can upgrade the schema first and then upgrade the operating system. If you select this approach, you will have to first locate and download the necessary MS-ADAM-Upgrade-2.ldf and adamschema.cat files. Or you can do the reverse: upgrade the operating system first and then upgrade the schema. This is the recommended approach, because both MS-ADAM-Upgrade-2.ldf and adamschema.cat are available in Windows Server\u00a02008\u00a0R2 in the C:\\Windows\\ADAM directory.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/li>\n<li class=\"unordered\">Make sure that all servers hosting the instances of your AD\u00a0LDS configuration set are running Windows Server\u00a02008\u00a0R2.<\/li>\n<li class=\"unordered\">Raise the functional level of your AD\u00a0LDS configuration set to Windows Server\u00a02008\u00a0R2 or higher. To do this using ADSIEdit:\n<ol class=\"ordered\">\n<li>Open ADSIEdit, click <strong>Action<\/strong> and click <strong>Connect to<\/strong> .<\/li>\n<li>In <strong>Connection Point<\/strong> , click <strong>Select a well known Naming Context:<\/strong> and choose <strong>Configuration<\/strong> and in <strong>Computer<\/strong> , click <strong>Select or type a domain or server:<\/strong> and then type <strong>Localhost:50000<\/strong> or an alternative server name and port that you chose during the AD LDS installation, and then click <strong>OK<\/strong> .<\/li>\n<li>Double-click <strong>Configuration [Localhost:50000]<\/strong> , double-click <strong>CN=Configuration,CN={<\/strong><em>GUID<\/em><strong>}<\/strong> , right-click <strong>CN=Partitions<\/strong> , and click <strong>Properties<\/strong> .<\/li>\n<li>Select <strong>msDS-Behavior-Version<\/strong> and click <strong>Edit<\/strong> .<\/li>\n<li>Type a value of <strong>4<\/strong> to raise the functional level to Windows Server 2008 R2 or <strong>5<\/strong> to raise it to Windows Server 2012, and click <strong>OK<\/strong> twice.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Requirements for Active Directory Recycle Bin<\/p>\n<p> Requirements for Active Directory Recycle Bin <\/p>\n<p>Updated: December 21, 2012<\/p>\n<p>Applies To: Windows Server 2008 R2<\/p>\n<p>By default, Active Directory Recycle Bin in Windows Server 2008 R2 is disabled.
