It is common for an organization to have multiple AWS accounts, In my opinion, it\u2019s a best practice to have different accounts for DEV, QA, and PROD environments. One of the reasons, just in case of any security compromise your other accounts would be unaffected.<\/p>\n

Managing multiple accounts could be a challenge\u00a0as well. Recently, I published an article on\u00a0Cross-account copying of EC2 Instances<\/a>. I thought it would be cool to share on how to do the same with EBS volumes, so here we go.<\/p>\n

Obtaining Target AWS Account ID<\/h3>\n

To obtain AWS account ID a simple solution is to do the following<\/p>\n

    \n
  1. Log in to\u00a0AWS console<\/strong>\u00a0on the target account<\/li>\n
  2. Click on the top right corner\u00a0Support<\/strong>\u00a0>\u00a0Support Center<\/strong><\/li>\n
  3. Copy the\u00a0AWS Account ID<\/strong>\u00a0and paste it into your favorite notepad, we will need it later<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

    Create a Snapshot of EBS Volume<\/h3>\n
      \n
    1. To create a snapshot of EBS volume, log in to\u00a0AWS console<\/strong>\u00a0and click on\u00a0Volumes<\/strong>\u00a0under\u00a0EC2 > Elastic Block Store<\/strong><\/li>\n
    2. Select the volume of your choice, Right-click or choose to\u00a0Create Snapshot<\/strong>\u00a0from the\u00a0Actions<\/strong>\u00a0Menu<\/li>\n
    3. Enter Volume description and click\u00a0Create Snapshot<\/strong><\/li>\n
    4. Verify the snapshot created<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

      Verify Snapshot in Target Account<\/h3>\n
        \n
      1. Login\u00a0to\u00a0AWS console<\/strong>\u00a0using target account, click on the\u00a0EC2 > Elastic Block Store > Snapshots<\/strong><\/li>\n
      2. Choose\u00a0Private Snapshots<\/strong>\u00a0from the filter<\/li>\n
      3. There you go, you can create a new EBS volume in target account using the shared snapshot<\/li>\n
